Hi there, friend! I’m Abigail, the creator behind Melodically Memorizing, an average twenty-something desiring to know God accurately through his Word and make him known by encouraging others do the same. I have walked with Jesus for a little more than fifteen years, yet Scripture memory used to be one of my weakest spiritual disciplines. Though I knew the importance of Scripture memory, and wanted to make it a regular practice, I otherwise have the memory of a goldfish, so I struggled to find an effective and efficient way to memorize and make it stick.
In high school, I had a youth pastor who was diligent to teach God’s Word to us students, so to make Scripture memory palatable, as well as enjoyable for us adolescence, he would faithfully break out his guitar each week and sing us Scripture as he put individual passages to individual melodies. I caught onto this quickly and, to my delight, found just a few weeks in, I had memorized passages longer than I would have normally picked and they stuck.
Fast forward to a twenty year old Abigail creating, writing and even recording my own original music, yet still unsure of how to make Scripture memory stick, I remembered how impactful my pastor’s musical method was, and decided to take a stab at putting Scripture to melody, since I myself was already loving and writing music. John 3:16 was the very first melody I wrote after quickly humming the tune into my phone so as to not forget it, ever since, God has been faithful in giving me creativity to continually find different melodies for each passage for the goal of not just knowing Bible verses, but to know them so I can know God accurately, his character, his desires, his plan for redemptive history, what he has called his children to live like, and to be diligent in guarding my heart against sin and temptation.
I pray that through Melodically Memorizing, you would be pointed to the Almighty God, our creator, sustainer, author of truth and righteousness, alpha and omega, first and last, beginning and the end, see his beauty, his love for you, his hate for sin, his hand of redemption, and his magnificent glory. I pray your heart, like mine has, would be stirred to know and to love Christ Jesus more and more, one melody at a time.
